About Us

We all need support through the most important period of our children: the early years

At GirlsWelfare, we believe in the power of dignity, education, and empowerment. Our journey began with a simple yet profound realization: many less fortunate girls in Kenya face significant challenges when it comes to managing their menstrual health. The lack of access to sanitary pads and adequate education not only affects their physical well-being but also hinders their pursuit of education and a brighter future.

Our Story

Our Story: Faith Muthoni Githua and Catherine Wanjiru Kagoko founded the organization to restore menstrual period dignity. They came up with the idea after visiting Kibera Slums and listening to some complaints by girls on how they would stay out of school one week a month during their periods. In an interview with parents, they complained the cost of menstrual pads had gone up, and with insufficient funds, they could not afford to purchase for their girls and put food on the table. These stories from the Kibera slum became a motivation to start the Girls Welfare Initiative to deliver disposable and washable pads. This approach reduces the number of teenage girls missing classes and or school. They will also compete fairly in schools and the community.
